I used to wait at the top of the stairs at Deepdale after every game with my friend Karen and you always said hello... You were a fab footballer and more importantly you are a lovely man - keep battling Parky, you are an inspiration. I live in NZ now, so I unfortunately can't attend any of your fundraising events - but I think about you and the joy you brought to thousands of football fans in Lancashire and wish you all the very best for the future xxxxx

Hi Gary and Deborah and family. I find it hard to imagine what you go through or how you manage, but what I hear and read about you fills me with admiration and respect for both of you and your family; and the profile of what you do goes beyond just your own battle. I hope that good work gives you strength. Andrew, a Claret.

1978-79 Thornaby Junior Schools football. Christ the King vs The Bader. You played centre forward for Christ the King back then and I remember at the kick off, the ball was rolled back to you and you shot from the half way line and scored passed Darren Collier (who went on to be a pro-goal keeper). We all knew then that you were a special player and roll on to 1986 there I was watching you from the Holgate playing for the 'Boro battling for every ball. Keep on fighting and I sincerely hope you get through this and make a full recovery.
Parky,
We now live in Aus, but can never forget the Boro of 86 onwards. It was a great team and you were one of the stalwarts in the team.
Always ready to have a punt - and you scored some really great goals! All the best mate - from some ardent Boro fans - now living Down Under !!

Supported Boro since the late 50s and some of the best footballing years were the mid 80s under Bruce Rioch. You were part of that team and will always be fondly remembered by Boro supporters. Here's hoping you get well and soon, best of luck Parky.

Dear Mr Parkinson,
I hope you make continued progress with the LIS. It must be frustrating to say the least lying immobile on a bed and having done a similar thing myself for 12 months, it seemed regular activities and a co-ordinated week were absolutely key to staying on top of it. Oner has to have a regular schedule to look forward to. As far as anything practical I would suggest that some of the research into electrical stimulation of the pons is illuminating and as you are no doubt aware there are a number of research bodies currently trying to establish whether more can be achieved to resolve LIS using stem cells and other stimuli.
I am not, sorry to say, a fan of football and have to side with Alan Sugar in his latest book - given that the game is £3bn in debt and 92% of revenue is paid on wages. Get his book - I think you would smile at it.
The very best to you and you family on a good recovery. I suppose you have heard it all before but a pal of mine Nigel had a virtual paraplegic state after a skiing accident and a year later had determinedly managed to start wanking again (sorry I meant 'walking' but after I typed it I thought that might make you smile) - he is now c96% there. Seriously, he really is.
And let's raise a glass to you being next Monsiuer !
Regards,
John
PS - do try to get the nurses to push you out into the sun at some point iff possible. I didn't see the sun and trees for months and it is amazing the therapeutic effect it has on ones soul.

Just wanted to wish you all the best Gary, As a Middlesbrough supporter for 28 years i would not have had the highs and Lows of this beautiful football club had it not been for your kindness when I was a child, meeting you on the cobbles outside Ayresome Park. You were an inspiration to me then for your hard work and guile and an even bigger inspiration to me now. Have a lot of tresured memories of meeting the teams over the years but my fondest is of yourself lifting me up outside those gates for a photo. It was the first time i had ever come so close to an idol and for that i will never forget what an amazing person you are. Stay strong and hope to see you outside the Ayresome Gates again in the Future.... Massive amount of Love to you mate.

I was at school with Gary's big sister, Tracey; he was a couple of years below us. He is one of the nice guys who stood out from the crowd and Tracey is lovely; they were and remain a much thought of and popular family.
I managed to speak to Tracey at the fundraising dinner that Bernie Slaven organised for Gary at the Tall Trees and my heart went out to her and the rest of his family and friends.
Debbie, I have heard you speak and you and your children must be so strong and loving that you are admirable.
I hope and pray Gary continues to get better x

As I lay in the bath last night listening to Radio 5's documentary on Gary and his family, I couldn't help but think how lucky he is to have such a fantastic supportive family. In today's climate of broken families and selfish attitudes, this is one family I would be proud to be part of! Gary, the path of your life has taken a tragic turn, but you can take solace in the fact you remain strong as a family unit., and your inner strength to fight the challenges sent to test you. In my mind.....YOU ARE A WINNER!!!!

Hi Gary and family - I'm afraid I don't remember Gary as a player, I cam here following a link on www.smallheathalliance.com, a Birmingham City forum. I just wanted to wish you all the best and offer strength to you all. Gary your wife is a wonderful woman, I am going through a traumatic time with my partner who unfortunately doesn't have the same level of dedication to me as your wife does to you. My difference is I made a mistake, and to receive forgiveness looks unlikely. However, my plight seems to be meaningless when I think about your situation. What a humbling story, and a wonderful wife and family you have. All the best Gary and I hope medicine can make you better very soon.
Hi Gary, saw the article on the BBC Sport website about yourself and your family. You are all so strong to keep going, you are all amazing people and so strong. I will continue to pray for you all, God Bless

Hi Gary, I was listening about your plight on 5live on the way to our church's prayer meeting and was deeply moved. I just want you to know I believe in a God who can work miracles and tonight we all prayed for one for you. If there's anything I can do just let me know. I will continue to keep praying. I heard Gary's story on Radio 5 today. I remember Gary as a player and hadn't realised that he had suffered such a terrible stroke. Gary, you and your family are a shining example of others of how to cope with such adversity. I wish yourself and Debbie every success in your rehabilitation. Keep fighting, keep pushing and never give up. From another Gloucestershire based man united fan.

Gary, As a young lad I started supporting Boro in 85 and used to have a poster of you (as well as the other lads, rippers mogga pally bernie coops) on my wall, and watch you from the Holgate playing for Brucie Rioch so I know that you have that tough Boro fighting spirit in you to help you through this illness. You've got a great family, your wife and kids are truly inspirational, as Im sure you already know. You've also got the nation behind you. Where there is life there is hope - keep up the good work fella. Up the Boro

Are they 100% sure this was a stroke, my wife had what they thought was a stroke and suffered bouts of lock-in syndrome, but there was never a concensas that it was a stroke... later after consulting a private consultant she was diagnosed with lyme disease and is now after 18 months of high strengh Anti-biotic out of her wheel chair and much improved, she is still not back to full health and is still on the anti-biotics but we can see an end to it, the NHS totally over looked this disease as a cause, and even denied the test results from the private doctor were valid, so i am paying for the private medicine at great cost but she is improving, please contact me if you feel there was a chance that he was ever bitten by a Tick, ticks transmit the disease..

I hear you will be returning home soon Gary, it's a big step but it will be a real boost to your morale. Was it a suprise to find out just how many people are thinking of you and willing you to recover. You are a very popular guy mate! I was at Burnley FC for 18 years, initially with Brian Miller and eventually moving to Leeds United with Sam Ellis when he left. My wife suffered a massive brain hemorrage 15 months ago, she was in hospital for 9 months but is now home recvering very slowly but surely. She has a bit of speech and some movement in her left side but all is going in the right direction. Keep fighting Gary, stay positive, you seem to have a fantastic family giving you wonderful support plus there's lots of "us" out here who you dont know but are willing you to get better. All my family send you their sincere best wishes and we hope and pray for your recovery. All the very best "Parky".

I also sufferd a massive stroke at the age of 41, five years ago it took away my left side of my body though i can walk with a stick I can't use my left arm, so i know exactly what your going through. You will get stronger, you have always kept yourself fit. This a big factor for your recovery. Keep thinking and say to yourself all the time in your mind, i will improve.

To Gary's Family from America.
We know your friend, Bernie Slavin, from when he and his team came to America. He informed us of Gary's situation, and we were able to raise a few dollars for Gary. We keep following his progress and hope that he continues to improve. We in America send our prayers for his complete recovery. God Bless You.
Parky, you are a legend mate, a very funny guy and would love to see you make a recovery from this.
The horse would love to come and see you some day!!

Hi Gary, you was one of my coaches at blackpool and ill always remember when you complimented me on a tackle I did and helped me progress in at Blackpool... Top coach and a Top man............. keep fighting.
MikeH
Keep fighting, Parky. Remember when you forced Sheedy from out penaly area to theirs in 89? My favourite piece of defending ever, sheer class. Do the same here. Don't give up until you've won.

Onwards and upwards Gary!
Thats now guaranteed
Positive vibes
Always remember what you you have achieved in life both family and sport
That will never be taken and will make you stronger
Hey Hey :)

Gary & family. Thinking of all of you at Bloomfield Road. We are in the play offs now, hopefully off to Wembley. But Parky, you will be there in our hearts.
Hope to see you soon at Bloomfield Road.
Wishing Gary and his family all the best i went to the bassy and Gary was at st pats, i remember him being an all round sportsmen and inspiration even back then when we were kids, he went on to play for the boro and local hero.

My prayers are with Gary for strength and for a complete recovery. You might find my song "I Am Still The Same" (based on the story of another Locked In Sufferer) encouraging, as we know that Gary is still the same person inside as he was before his injury. ~ DC
All the best, Gary. Just visited Teesside for a couple matches and bought the '4 PARKY' Wristband. Proud to wear one in Finland now. You are one of our own!
Never give up Gary, Be the hero we boro lads know you are, "Thoughts go out to you and family"
Last year a group of lads from the Devonshire arms raised thousands for the GPTF and are just 5 weeks away from completing the National 3 Peaks challenge to raise more cash for him. PLease contact me directly if you want to help or just spread the word in support of a truly lovely man
I listened to the piece on Radio 5 Live - it was really sad but really inspiring at the same time. What an amazing family. I hope medical science makes advances that can help you soon. Sending positive thoughts to you and your family.
All the Best to Gary and his wonderful family and I hope things get better soon , keep fighting !
Wishing you guys all our thiughts, keep strong and would like to offer some kind of support.
Take care Sean, Kaz, Tom and Ollie

Dear Gary & family,
Was both moved and inspired by last night's Five Live documentary about your traumatic last 18 months. Wishing you all the best during what must be the most incredibly hard time for you all.
Mihir
Just listened to the special on 5Live. What an amazing family. As a disabled person myself I know how a strong family can help. We've had nothing like the struggles the Parkinsons have faced though.
You should all be very proud of each other, you're a true inspiration. Wishing you all the very best for your on going fight. Good luck

Paul Sparks. (Youth leader at Bethel Free Church, Warrington)
My heart goes out to Parky and his lovely family ,his wife Deborah is an inspiration to all loving families ,God bless you all ,you have made me feel quite humble and i am sure thousands of other football fans in this country will join me in wishing you well in your journey ,never ever give up hope ,Best wishes to you all ,John Balfour ,an Exeter City fan.
Up the Boro
Just heard your moving and inspirational story on the radio tonight and although I never tweet or blog or generally comment on anything online felt moved to do so. I was at Wembley when you scored for Burnley in the play off finals and it was one of the best days ever. I wish you and your family all the best and hope that all your hardwork and determination is rewarded.
Gary
Heard the brave story about you and your special family on Radio 5 tonight, incredibly moving.
Best wishes to you all from me and my family.

Hi Gary. Clem and the 5Live team did you justice tonight. It doesn't seem like a year since I was at Bernie's fundraiser at Tall Trees. All the Boro fans are still rooting for you.Where is life there is hope so keep going. You are in our thoughts.
I have my 4parky wristband...and showing and telling everyone in Brum, about the amazing Gary parkinson....mainly the wembley goal...one of the best times of my life...and I thank you for it .! Keep going kid...you have strong family and friends around you....Hope to see you down the turf again soon !
Just been listening to his wife Debbie on Radio 5 and it was very humbling and moved me to tears. My heart goes out to Gary and all his family
Best wishes
Darren Smith
I've heard your story on 5Live today and just wanted to wish you and your family all the best. Clare
Just a quick message to say my thoughts are with you, being a carer myself, Paul.
Good luck Gary. My wife Jenny had a brain stem stroke when she was just 23. She was locked in but 12 years later she has regained some speech can eat normal foods mostly. She still has no movement in her limbs is in a wheelchair and we have an okay life considering everything. Good luck again, if the family have any questions please feel free. Aaron

Gary, I was at the Etihad last night to watch Man City v WBA, and all I could think of was your penalty in North End's 1-0 over City at Maine Road in 1998. You were my hero as a North End fan growing up. Keep fighting, Gary. Thinking of you and your family.
Tom
Full of admiration for you Gary and the courage that you display. Have faith in the little prayer that I have said for you.

i was so sad to read the article on your terrible illness . you played at boro at a time when i used to go , now i am just a radio supporter. all my families wishes are with you and your family . x x
Gary - I admire your courage in sharing your world with the BBC. I'm not a Boro fan but I remember you, like Colin Cooper, who came to play for my team Forest as similarly determined players. I wish you every blessing in your recovery and hope you may have better days ahead.
Just read the article on the BBC website - stay strong, mate. Sounds like you're a fighter and that you've also got a fantastic family and friends. All the best - David Gould, Stoke City supporter.
